history
The Estonian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1938 as a learned society. With the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union , the Academy of Sciences was declared dissolved by a decree of July 17, 1940. In September 1945 it was re-established as the "Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR " (Estonian Eesti NSV Teaduste Akadeemia ). During the Soviet Union it consisted of a central library and four faculties with a total of fifteen research institutes as well as other scientific institutions and museums.
In April 1989, shortly before Estonian regained independence, the Academy was renamed the Estonian Academy of Sciences. It also got its present structure back as a pure learned society.
Seat
The Estonian Academy of Sciences is located on Toompea in Tallinn . The historic building, the so-called Palais Ungern-Sternberg, was built in 1865 by the Berlin architect Martin Gropius . Until the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940, the cultural self-government of the German minority in Estonia had its seat there.
