Johan Eichfeld
Johan Hansowitsch Eichfeld ( Russian Иоган Гансович Эйхфельд ; born January 13 . Jul / 25. January 1893 greg. In White Stone ; † 20th April 1989 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian - Soviet agronomists and plant breeders .
Life
Eichfeld studied at the Petrograd Agricultural Institute with a degree in 1920. In 1923 he became an assistant at the All-Russian Institute for Applied Botany . He began his scientific work under the direction of Nikolai Ivanovich Vawilows . In 1924 he went north and organized and directed the agricultural experimental station Chibiny near Apatity on the Chibinen . In 1930, after the reorganization of the experimental station, he became director of the polar department and then also of the polar experimental station of the new Leningrad All-Russian Institute for Agriculture (WIR). In 1935 he became a member of the Soviet Academy of Agricultural Sciences (WASChNIL). He was a supporter of Trofim Denisovich Lyssenko . In 1940 he became director of WIR (until 1951). Eichfeld's main focus was on promoting agriculture in the region north of the Arctic Circle . This included the improvement of the soil and the improvement of agricultural technology . He became the author of some early maturing varieties of stock cultures for the north. He was a doctor of agricultural science .
In 1946 Eichfeld became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (AN-ESSR). In 1950 he succeeded Hans Kruus as President of the AN-ESSR and remained so until 1968 when Arnold Veimer succeeded him. In 1953 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR .
1958-1961 Eichfeld was Vice-Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet and Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (ESSR) as successor to August Jacobson . He was followed by Aleksei Müürisepp after. In 1961 Eichfeld became a member of the CPSU . He was a member of the XXII. Party Congress of the CPSU in 1961 and member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1954–1970). In 1964 he became Vice President of WASChNIL.
