The Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (abbreviation: ESSR , Estonian : Eesti Nõukogude Sotsialistlik Vabariik abbreviated: Eesti NSV or ENSV , Russian Эстонская ССР / Estonskaja SSR ) was 1940-1990 a Union Republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the field of Estonia , the 1918's Had gained independence from the Russian Empire .

On August 20, 1991, the independence of the Republic of Estonia was officially restored by the parliament of the EPSR. A formal exit from the Soviet Union was waived because the annexation by the Soviet Union was considered illegal under international law and therefore not binding.
