Arno Köörna

Arno Arturowitsch Köörna ( Russian Арно Артурович Кеёрна ; born February 2, 1926 in Nõo ( Tartu County ); † December 21, 2017 ) was an Estonian - Soviet economist and university professor .

Life

Köörna attended secondary school No. 1 in Tartu (graduation in 1947) and then studied at the University of Tartu at the Chair of Political Economy with graduation in 1955. He stayed there as an aspirant , taught and became a lecturer . He dealt with problems of regional planned economy cost accounting and science and technology policy. In 1961 he defended his candidate dissertation .

In 1965 Köörna became vice director and in 1966 director of the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (AN-ESSR). In 1970 he defended his dissertation on economic methods for controlling production quality in industry, whereupon he received a doctorate in economics . In 1972 he was appointed professor and elected corresponding member of the AN-ESSR. In 1973 he became chief secretary, in 1975 a full member, in 1982 first vice-president and in 1990 president of the AN-ESSR as successor to Karl Rebane . In 1994 Köörna left the presidency. His successor was Jüri Engelbrecht.

Köörna was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1970–1974) and a member of the Supreme Soviet of the ESSR. Since 1991 he has been a member of a Masonic Lodge . In 1998 he became professor at the private European University Euroülikool in Tallinn , founded in 1997 , from which he retired in 2005 .

Köörna was married to Echa nee Lind and had two children. Köörna was buried in the Tallinn Forest Cemetery.
