Erik Shimon Applebaum , Hebrew אריק שמעון אפלבאום Eriq Šimʿon Apelbaum orשמעון אפלבוים Šimʿon Apelboim (born April 21, 1911 in Liverpool , died August 21, 2008 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli archaeologist. From 1965 to 1982 he was Professor of Classical Archeology and Jewish History at Tel Aviv University .

Shimon Applebaum attended Leighton Park School in Reading and studied from 1928 to 1931 at Brasenose College of the University of Oxford . In 1939 he emigrated to Israel and was one of the founding members of Kibbutz Kfar Blum . Interrupted by World War II , where he was the British Army served and the rank of sergeant for the antiquities of Cyrenaica was responsible, he obtained the Oxford Bachelor , 1951 he was with the work of Agriculture in Roman Britain doctorate . In the years 1961–1966 he directed the excavations of the theater in Beit Shean - at the time one of the largest excavations of classical archeology in Israel. In 1965 he was one of the founders of the Department of Classical Archeology at Tel Aviv University , where he taught as a professor until his retirement in the 1980s.

His main research interests included the Western Samaria Survey , the Bar Kochba uprising , to which his work Prolegomena to the Study of the Second Jewish Revolt (AD 132–135) was, and the Roman road network in Israel.
