history
In 1889, a train station was built on the Tartu - Valga railway, which was named after the Elva River. Until then there were only a few farms and a post office on the site. A settlement was built at the train station over the next few decades.
On June 1, 1923 Elva received local rights, and its administration planned many tourist facilities. In 1934 Elva became a climatic health resort. Already in 1938 the place got the city rights.
In 1940 the first Soviet occupation took place.
During the German occupation of Estonia in 1941, a temporary power vacuum developed in Elva; Estonian militiamen, so-called forest brothers , freed Elva from the Soviet occupation. On July 10, 1941, the postmaster began to overstamp existing Soviet stamps and postcard forms with an EESTI POST hand stamp . This was done with the consent of the local militia and was intended to underline Estonian independence. However, by order of the German occupying power, the sale was stopped on August 12, 1941, as the continuation of Estonian independence was not planned.
From 1950 to 1962 Elva was the center of a district of the Estonian SSR .
