Ago Markvardt , formerly Ago Elmarowitsch Markward ( Russian Аго Эльмарович Марквард , born August 11, 1969 in Elva , then Estonian SSR ) is a former Soviet , then Estonian Nordic combiner .
Markvardt started winter sports at the age of nine. He won the bronze medal with the Soviet team at the Junior World Championships in 1988 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, Austria and in 1989 in Vang, Norway . In 1989 he also won the bronze medal in the individual competition.
At the Olympic Winter Games in 1994 he was second after ski jumping, but could not hold this position in the subsequent cross-country skiing and had to be content with fifth place. Together with Allar Levandi and Magnar Freimuth , he just missed an Olympic medal in the team competition. The Estonian team finished fourth. In 1997 Markvardt again just missed a medal at a major international event. At the Nordic World Ski Championships he also took fourth place in the individual competition.
Markvardt's best result in a World Cup competition was eighth in 1994 in Trondheim , which he was able to fight for again in Lahti in 1996 . Markvardt achieved his best results in 1996 in Germany in the B World Cup . He won the competitions in Schonach and Oberhof . In Hinterzarten he took second place and in Garmisch-Partenkirchen he came third. In 1988 as well as 1995 and 1996 he was Estonian Champion in Nordic Combined , he also won the national titles in ski jumping in 1994 and 1996. In 1998 he ended his career.
Markvardt was athlete of the year in Estonia in 1994 both as an individual athlete and with the team . Since 2001 Ago Markvardt worked as a jumping judge for the FIS . He can also be seen as an expert on Estonian television . Since 2014 he has been on the board of the Estonian Ski Association and chairman of the ski jumping and biathlon committee. His daughter Margaret Markvardt is a multiple Estonian swimming champion .
