Kallaste ( Russian Красные Горы Krasnyje Gory ) is a city in the northwest of Tartu County in Estonia , on the west bank of Lake Peipus . At the beginning of 2006, Kallaste had 1,152 inhabitants, most of them native Russian speakers. The Russian name of the city is derived from the steeply sloping coast of red sandstone. Kallaste was an independent municipality until 2017, since then it has been part of the rural municipality of Peipsiääre .
history
Kallaste originated in the 18th century as a settlement of Russian Old Believers . Kallaste received its town charter in 1938. The last public statue of Lenin in Estonia was erected in Kallaste in 1988 .
Attractions
The landscape of Kallaste is characterized by the shore of Lake Peipus and the red sandstone coast that runs parallel to the shore of the lake. Not far from the bus station there is a small post office with a tourist information office, which mainly provides information about the scenic aspect of Kallaste. The simple Orthodox church stands on the edge of the city.
