Peipsiääre is a rural community in the Estonian Tartu county . Before the municipal reform in 2017, Peipsiääre had an area of 31 km² with 831 inhabitants (2010). With the merger with the city of Kallaste and the rural communities Alatskivi and Vara , the area grew to 652 km², the population to 5631 (January 1, 2019).
The community is located directly on Lake Peipus . In addition to the main town Kolkja, the rural municipality includes the town of Kallaste and the villages of Alasoo, Alatskivi, Ätte, Alajõe, Haapsipea, Kargaja, Kasepää, Kauda, Keressaare, Kesklahe, Kõdesi, Kokora, Koosa, Koosalaane, Kuningvere, Khepera Lahe, Kuusiku, and Kuusiku , Linaleo, Matjama , Meoma, Metsakivi, Mustametsa, Naelavere, Nina, Orgemäe, Padakõrve, Päiksi, Papiaru, Pärsikivi, Passi, Peatskivi, Pilpaküla, Põdra, Põldmaa, Põrgu, Riidemi , Saburi, Särgla, Savastvere, Savimetsa, Savka, Selgise, Sipelga, Sookalduse, Sudemäe, Tähemaa, Torila, Toruküla, Tõruvere, Undi, Väljaküla, Vara, Vanaussaia, Välgi, Varnja and Virtsu.
Some of the people live from fishing and growing onions. The majority of the people belong to the Orthodox faith of the Old Believers , who fled religious persecution from Russia to the west bank of Lake Peipus in the 18th century . The churches and prayer houses were renovated with funds from the European Union after Estonian independence was regained and are also open to tourists.
