Urmas Kruuse (born July 14, 1965 in Elva , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . He has been a member of the liberal reform party since 2002 . From April 9, 2015 to November 23, 2016, Kruuse was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas Minister for Rural Development.

Early years

Urmas Kruuse was born as the son of Ülo and Jolanda Kruuse (née Saul) in the small town of Elva in southern Estonia. There he attended the local school until 1983. After regaining Estonian independence, Kruuse studied business management at the private International University Audentes in Tallinn until 2004 .

From 1985 to 1994 Urmas Kruuse worked as a freelance musician, initially with the band Risk , in which his brother Enn Kruuse also played. From 1990 he was successful with the Urmas Kruuse Band . From 1997 to 2002 Kruuse worked in the private sector.

politics

From 1999 to 2002, Kruuse was a member of Elva City Council. From 2002 to April 2007, Kruuse was mayor of his hometown Elva. From 2007 to 2014 he was the mayor of the second largest Estonian city of Tartu . From 2007 to 2010, Kruuse was chairman of the board of the Estonian Association of Cities ( Eesti Linnade Liit ).

From March 26, 2014 to April 9, 2015 Urmas Kruuse was Minister for Health and Labor in the social-liberal coalition government under Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas . From April 9, 2015 to November 23, 2016, Kruuse was Minister for Rural Development in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Rõivas. Then Kruuse moved as a member of the Estonian parliament.

Private life

Urmas Kruuse is married to Katrin Kruuse. The couple have six children. In 2010, Kruuse received the title “Father of the Year” from the Estonian Women's Association.
