Taavi Rõivas (born September 26, 1979 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . He belongs to the liberal Estonian Reform Party ( Estonian Eesti Reformierakond ), of which he was chairman until 2017. He was Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia from March 26, 2014 to November 23, 2016.

Life

Taavi Rõivas graduated from Tallinn Realschule in 1997. In 2002 he graduated from the University of Tartu in Foreign Economics and Trade .

Political activity

Rõivas has been a member of the Reform Party since 1998. From 1999 to 2002 he was an advisor to Justice Minister Märt Rask . He then worked for the AS IT Group from 2002–2003 .

From 2003 to 2004 Rõivas was the office manager of Population Minister Paul-Eerik Rummo . 2004-2005 he held the office of district mayor for the Tallinn district of Haabersti . From 2005 to 2007 Rõivas worked as an advisor to Prime Minister Andrus Ansip in the Estonian State Chancellery. During the same period he was a member of the Tallinn City Council.

From 2007 until he joined the government in 2012, Rõivas was a member of the Estonian parliament ( Riigikogu ). From 2009 to 2011 he held the office of chairman of the finance committee, then the chairman of the European committee.

On December 11, 2012, he was in the Cabinet appointed by Andrus Ansip to the Minister for Social Affairs. He succeeded Hanno Pevkur , who moved to the justice department.

On March 26, 2014 Taavi Rõivas was sworn in as the new Estonian Prime Minister. He succeeds his party colleague Andrus Ansip, who joined the European Commission in Brussels in November as commissioner for the digital single market . Rõivas formed a coalition government from the Liberal Reform Party and the Social Democratic Party . At the time of his election, he was the youngest head of government in the European Union at the age of 34 .

After the 2015 general election , he formed a new government made up of the Reform Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit . However, this broke up in November 2016. The Reform Party then went into the opposition and Rõivas took over the parliamentary seat, which he had not taken as a member of the government after the 2015 election. In addition, he made his position as chairman of the reform party available and was replaced by Hanno Pevkur when the new board was elected in January 2017. In the following years he was vice-president of the Riigikogu , but also had to give up this post in October 2017 after misconduct in office and returned as a simple member of parliament.

Private

Taavi Rõivas has been in a relationship with the Estonian singer Luisa Värk (* 1987) since 2007 and has a daughter born in 2009 and a son born in 2016. The couple announced their engagement in October 2016 and have been married since August 2017.
