Andres Tarand (born January 11, 1940 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician. He was Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia from 1994 to 1995 and a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009 .

Life

Andres Tarand graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in climatology in 1963 . In 1973 he got a second degree in geography . From 1968 to 1988 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Tartu. From 1988 to 1990 he was director of the university's botanical garden. During the period of perestroika, he campaigned strongly for environmental issues and for Estonia to break away from the Soviet Union .

Estonian politics

When Estonia regained independence, Tarand went into politics. From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia ( Eesti Vabariigi Ülemnõukogu ). In 1992 and from 1995 to 2004 Tarand was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). Andres Tarand was Environment Minister from 1992 to 1994 and Prime Minister of Estonia from November 1994 to April 1995.

Andres Tarand has been a member of the social democratic party Mõõdukad since 1996, renamed Rahvaerakond Mõõdukad in 1999 and the Estonian Social Democratic Party in 2004 . From 1996 to 2001 Tarand was party chairman. In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament for the Estonian Social Democrats.

Environmental commitment

Andres Tarand advocates a stronger emphasis on environmental issues in politics and climate protection. He is active in numerous non-governmental organizations.
