Mart Rask

Märt Rask (born December 19, 1950 in Kõue , Harju County ) is an Estonian lawyer and politician. He was chairman of the Estonian State Court ( Riigikohus ) from September 2004 to September 2013 .

Life, politics, law

Märt Rask graduated from high school in Põltsamaa in 1969 before studying law at the University of Tartu from 1973 to 1978 . Since 1979 he worked as a lawyer in Tallinn .

With the recovery of Estonian independence, Märt Rask went into politics. From 1990 to 1992 he was first Deputy Minister of Justice of Estonia and from February to October 1992 Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Prime Minister Tiit Vähi . From 1993 to 1995 he worked as a lawyer in the law firm Teder ja Rask , which he co-founded . In 1996 he joined the liberal reform party founded two years earlier .

From November 1995 to December 1996, Märt Rask was Interior Minister in Tiit Vahi's third cabinet . From December 1996 to March 1999, Rask worked again as a freelance lawyer, before he held the post of Justice Minister of the Republic of Estonia in the governments of Mart Laar and Siim Kallas from March 1999 to March 2003 .

After leaving the government, he was initially a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) before he took office as Chairman of the Estonian State Court on September 13, 2004 as the successor to Uno Lõhmus . On September 12, 2013, Rask's tenure as Chairman of the State Court ended. He was succeeded by Priit Pikamäe .

Märt Rask is the author of numerous legal publications.
