Priit Pikamäe (born November 22, 1973 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian lawyer. He has been Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union since February 2019 .

Life

Priit Pikamäe passed his master's degree in 2001 from the Law Faculty of the University of Tartu . Stays abroad led him to the universities of Portiers (1994/95) and 1997 Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) . In 2006 he received his PhD from the University of Tartu. He then became a visiting professor at the University of Tartu.

Pikamäe is a criminal lawyer . One of his special subjects is the rights of prisoners.

During his studies, Pikamäe was employed in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995/96 and then in the Ministry of Justice since 1996 in the areas of criminal law and criminal procedure law. After graduating, he worked as a judge in Tallinn in both first and second instance.

In 2006, Priit Pikamäe was elected Judge at the State Court of Justice ( Riigikohus ) by the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) . From 2010 to 2013 he was chairman of the criminal senate. In May 2013, Pikamäe was elected as the new chairman of the State Court of Justice by parliament without a dissenting vote on the proposal of President Toomas Hendrik Ilves . His term of office began on September 13, 2013 and was theoretically limited to nine years. Pikamäe was the fifth president of the State Court. He succeeded Märt Rask , whose term of office expired in September 2013.

He has been Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union since February 6, 2019. Previously, on February 4, Villu Kõve was elected by the Estonian Parliament as the new President of the State Court.
