Toomas Hendrik Ilves [ 'toːmas' hɛndrik' ilvɛs ] (born December 26, 1953 in Stockholm , Sweden ) was President of the Republic of Estonia from October 9, 2006 to October 10, 2016 .

Life

Youth and education

Toomas Hendrik Ilves was born on the run of his Estonian parents in the Swedish capital Stockholm and grew up in the United States . He graduated from high school in Leonia , New Jersey in 1972 .

Ilves studied psychology at Columbia University from 1972 to 1976 and graduated in 1978 with a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania . From 1974 to 1979 he was a research fellow at Columbia University's Faculty of Psychology, from 1979 to 1981 deputy director of the Open Education Center in New Jersey, and from 1981 to 1983 director of an arts center in Vancouver .

From 1983 to 1994 Ilves worked for the radio station Radio Free Europe in Munich , from 1988 to 1993 as head of the Estonian-language editorial team. He then moved to the diplomatic service of the Republic of Estonia. From 1993 to 1996 he was Estonian Ambassador to the USA, Canada and Mexico . From 1996 to 1998 and 1999 to 2002 he was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia.

From 1999 Ilves was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). He is a co-founder of the Estonian People's Party ( Rahvaerakond ), of which he was chairman until 1999. Until 2003 he was chairman of the successor party Rahvaerakond Mõõdukad ("People's Party - The Moderates"), which in 2004 was renamed the Social Democratic Party ( Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Erakond ). In 2003 Ilves became an observing member of the European Parliament and when Estonia joined the EU in 2004, he became a member of the European Parliament . He is considered to be the father of the landslide victory of the Estonian Social Democrats in the 2004 European elections.

On August 29, 2006, Ilves was the only candidate in the presidential elections in the Estonian parliament, but failed to achieve the required majority in two ballots. In the following vote in the electoral assembly ( Valimiskogu ) on September 23, 2006, he won with 174 to 162 votes against the previous incumbent Arnold Rüütel . On October 9, 2006, he began his five-year term as the fourth President of the Republic of Estonia.

On August 29, 2011 Ilves was re-elected for a further term . In the Estonian Parliament, 73 of the 101 MPs voted for him in a secret ballot. His challenger, MEP Indrek Tarand , received 25 votes.

As successor by Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who was unable to run for president after two terms, the non-party was in 2016 Kersti Kaljulaid chosen . She took office on October 10, 2016.

Private

Toomas Hendrik Ilves has a son and a daughter from his first marriage. In his second marriage he was married to Evelin Ilves , with whom he has a daughter. In April 2015, the couple announced their divorce. In November 2015, Ilves got engaged to the Latvian civil servant Ieva Kupce . On January 2, 2016, media reported about their wedding. Their son Hans Hendrik Ilves was born on November 28, 2016.

He is a member of the Student Estonian Association .
