Indrek Tarand (born February 3, 1964 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician and journalist. From 2009 to 2019 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Life and politics

Indrek Tarand graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1983. In 1984/85 he did his military service in the Soviet army . He then studied history at the University of Tartu , where he graduated in 1991. In 1993 Indrek Tarand went into politics. He was initially special envoy of the Estonian government in the largely Russian-speaking city ​​of Narva . Then he was in 1993/94 adviser to the Conservative Prime Minister Mart Laar .

From 1994 to 2002 Tarand u. a. as State Secretary ( Kantler ) in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Tarand left the ministry after conflicts with Foreign Minister Kristiina Ojuland . In 2002/2003 he was employed by the Estonian Central Bank ( Eesti Pank ) as head of the human resources department. He then worked as a freelance journalist. In 2005 he became director of the “ Kindral Laidoneri Muuseum ”. In 2007 Tarand was an advisor to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili . He is also known on Estonian television as a dazzling show master and entertainer and appears as an “enfant terrible” in politics and society.

In the election for the Estonian President on August 29, 2011, Tarand was defeated by the previous incumbent Toomas Hendrik Ilves with 25 to 73 votes.

MEP

In the European elections in Estonia in 2009 , Indrek Tarand was elected as a single candidate in the European Parliament (Estonia has a total of six members). It received the second most votes after the Center Party , ahead of the other parties. Tarand does not belong to any political party and is considered a lateral thinker on the Estonian political scene. His 2009 election is also seen as a protest against the established Estonian parties. In the European Parliament, Tarand joined the group The Greens / European Free Alliance . He signed the Spinelli Group's manifesto for a federal Europe .

In the 2014 European elections , Tarand was able to maintain his seat in Strasbourg as an individual candidate. In 2019 he no longer ran for the European Parliament, but ran for the Social Democrats in the elections to the national parliament in March . But he could not win a mandate there.

Private life

Indrek Tarand is married and has two sons and a daughter. Indrek Tarand is the older brother of the Estonian publicist Kaarel Tarand (* 1966) and the son of the former Estonian Prime Minister and Social Democratic MEP Andres Tarand (* 1940).
