The European elections in Estonia in 2019 took place on May 26, 2019. It was carried out as part of the EU- wide European elections in 2019 . It was the fourth direct election to the European Parliament since the Republic of Estonia joined the European Union in 2004.

In Estonia, 6 mandates were initially awarded in the European Parliament ; after the UK leaves the EU, another MEP from Estonia will enter the European Parliament.

The election took place almost three months after the Estonian parliamentary election on March 3, 2019 .

Suffrage

All EU citizens who are registered on the Estonian electoral roll are entitled to vote. You must be at least 18 years old on election day. The minimum age to stand for election in Estonia is 21 years. Members of the armed forces are exempt from voting.

The polling stations are open on election day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Between the tenth and the seventh day before the election, voters outside of their place of residence can cast their votes in primary offices. If you are living abroad, you can also vote by post or at an Estonian diplomatic mission abroad.

In addition, voters can cast their vote online using a digital signature up to the fourth day before the election. To do this, you usually need your electronic identity card, a reader and two PINs.

The Estonian MPs are elected according to the principle of proportional representation. The entire country counts as one constituency. The D'Hondt procedure is used to determine the number of representatives . The system of open lists applies , that is, the order of the candidates on the party lists is determined by the voter. There is no explicit blocking clause , but the electoral system results in a factual blocking clause of up to 12.5%.

Indrek Tarand was elected to the European Parliament as an independent in 2014. He joined the Greens / EFA group and the European Green Party . He is no longer running for the European Parliament, but ran for the Social Democrats in the elections to the national parliament in March 2019. But he could not win a mandate there.

Isamaa surprisingly announced in March 2019 that it wanted to go into the European elections with the former general and commander of the Defense Forces , Riho Terras , as the top candidate. A week later, the EKRE adopted its list of candidates for the EU Parliament. She decided with her party leader Mart Helme to run as the top candidate. The SDE nominated former foreign minister and presidential candidate Marina Kaljurand , while the reform party with its long-time chairman, EU commissioner and former prime minister Andrus Ansip and the center party with MEP Yana Toom ran as the top candidates.
