The Maltese party system is a classic two-party system . The social democratic Partit Laburista (PL, Labor Party) has governed since 2013. The conservative Christian Democratic Partit Nazzjonalista (PN, Nationalist Party) was in government for 15 years and led Malta to the European Union. In the 2017 parliamentary elections , the liberal Partit Demokratiku (PD, Democratic Party) - a PL spin-off - entered the Maltese parliament again for the first time since 1962 , albeit on joint lists with the PN.
