A total of 11 seats

The 2019 European elections in Ireland took place on Friday, May 24, 2019 as part of the 2019 EU- wide European elections .

In Ireland, 11 seats were initially awarded in the European Parliament , but 13 members were elected. Two elected officials from Ireland moved into the European Parliament on January 31, 2020 after the UK left the EU .

At the same time as the European elections, local elections and two referendums were held across Ireland .

On May 30, 2019, at the request of candidate Liadh Ní Riada (Sinn Fein), a complete recount of the votes in the South constituency was decided. This could have taken up to six weeks. On June 5, Ní Riada withdrew the recount request.

Electoral system and constituencies

Ireland is divided into three multi-member constituencies: Dublin, South, and Midlands-North West

Voting took place in multi-person constituencies with transferable individual votes . In 2014 the number of constituencies was reduced from four to three. A return to four constituencies was discussed due to the increase in the number of Irish MPs from eleven to 13, but the division remains at three constituencies:

  • Dublin (increased from three to four seats)
  • South (increased from four to five seats, extended by two counties from the constituency of Midlands – North-West)
  • Midlands-North-West (4 seats as before, reduced by two counties).

Starting point and parties

2014 was Fianna Fáil (FF) Although incur most Erstpräferenzen, but only won a mandate, two less than in 2009. The only FF MEP Brian Crowley also joined the ECR Group to, not the Group of ALDE , the the FF belongs to. Fine Gael (FG), on the other hand, was able to defend her four mandates from 2009. Another winner was Sinn Féin , who won three mandates. In addition, three non-party politicians entered the European Parliament, more than ever before. The Labor Party, on the other hand, lost both of its seats.

Since the national parliamentary election in 2016 , Fine Gael ruled in a minority government supported by Fianna Fáil.
