Marian Harkin

Marian Harkin (born November 26, 1953 in Sligo ) is an Irish politician and former member of the European Parliament .

Life

Harkin studied mathematics at University College Dublin , where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 . A year later she received her advanced diploma in education . After completing her studies, Harkin worked as a mathematics teacher from 1977 to 2002. In 1999 she ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the European Parliament . In 2002 she was elected as an independent candidate in the 29th Dáil Éireann . In 2004 she was elected to the European Parliament . In the elections for the 30th Dáil Éireann in 2007, she decided not to run again in order to concentrate fully on her mandate as MEP. In the European Parliament she belonged to the group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and was a member of the board of directors there. She was also a member of the European Democratic Party .

As a member of the European Parliament, she was a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Delegation for relations with the United States. She is also a deputy in the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development , in the Committee on Petitions and in the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand.

After defending her mandate in 2009 and 2014 , she did not run again in the 2019 European elections .

family

Harkin lived with her family in Manorhamilton until 1996 when her husband died . Her husband had owned a supermarket there. After the death of her husband, she moved to Sligo with her two sons, where she currently lives.
