Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development
The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development ( Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development , AGRI) is one of the twenty standing committees of the European Parliament . The committee chairman has been Norbert Lins ( CDU / EPP ) since July 2019 .
The committee is responsible for questions relating to the common agricultural policy of the European Union as well as for EC legislation in the areas of veterinary, phytosanitary and animal welfare law , with the exception of questions relating to the protection of human health (for which the Committee for Environmental Issues, Public health and food safety ). The committee is also concerned with improving the quality of agricultural products, the supply of agricultural raw materials and forestry . He also maintains relations between the European Parliament and the Community Plant Variety Office .
Although the common agricultural policy is an important policy area of the European Union, the European Parliament has hardly any co-determination rights in this area, so that the Agriculture Committee is not one of the most influential bodies. Its counterpart in the Council of the European Union , the Council for Agriculture and Fisheries, is particularly important . The responsible member in the European Commission is the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development . According to the Lisbon Treaty , however, the common agricultural policy should come under the ordinary legislative procedure and the use of financial instruments for agricultural policy ( EAGF and EAFRD ) should also come under the final decision of Parliament, so that the Agriculture Committee would then have greater influence.
