The University College Dublin - National University of Ireland, Dublin (mostly simply University College Dublin (UCD), Irish An Coláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath ) is Ireland's largest university with over 33,000 students (as of 2020) . It is located in Dublin , the capital of Ireland.

The UCD has been part of the National University of Ireland since 1908 .

history

The beginnings of the UCD go back to the year 1854, then still as Catholic University of Ireland . The first rector of the new university was Cardinal John Henry Newman . In 1882 the UCD under its current name became a college of the Royal University of Ireland, which in turn was replaced in 1908 by the National University of Ireland (NUI). From 1908 to 1997 the UCD was a college of the NUI until it was elevated to a constituent university in the University Act 1997 .
