University College Cork

The University College Cork (abbreviated UCC , Irish Coláiste na hOllscoile Corcaigh ) is a university in the city of Cork in Ireland . The college , which has over 21,000 students studying, is part of the National University of Ireland .

The campus of the UCC is located on the southern canal of the River Lee , at the point where a monastery founded by Saint Finbarr (Gill Abbey) and his school stood in the Middle Ages ; therefore the motto of the university is "where Finbarr taught, let Munster learn" - "where Finbarr taught, let Munster learn."

Historical

The UCC was founded in 1845 by Queen Victoria as Queen's College (together with Queen's University Belfast and Queen's College Galway, now NUI Galway ) and is therefore (together with the above-mentioned universities) the second oldest university in Ireland after Trinity College Dublin . The first president of the university was the Irish chemist Robert Kane (1809-1890). George Boole (1815–1864) is known from the academics of Queen's College , who founded the Boolean algebra named after him and who was the first mathematics professor there. In 1908 the UCC was raised under its current name as a constituent college part of the National University of Ireland and in 1997 to a constituent university .
