The University of Limerick (abbreviated UL , Irish Ollscoil Luimnigh ) is a university in Ireland .

It was founded on January 1, 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick and received university status in 1989 (University of Limerick Act). This was the first university to be established in Ireland since Ireland gained independence in 1922 (along with Dublin City University, founded on the same day ).

In 1845 Limerick had unsuccessfully applied for a location at the Queen's University of Ireland ; Ultimately, however, Belfast ( Queen's University Belfast ), Cork ( University College Cork ) and Galway ( National University of Ireland, Galway ) were preferred. In September 1959, Mayor Ted Russell founded a "Limerick University Project Committee" which ultimately resulted in the establishment of the National Institute for Higher Education in 1972.

UL's 240 hectare (600 acre ) campus (National Technology Park) is located on the south bank of the Shannon , in Castletroy , approximately three miles (five kilometers ) east of central Limerick .

There are currently around 17,000 students enrolled . The UL has four faculties: the Kemmy Business School , the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences , the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and the Faculty of Arts , Humanities, and Social Sciences .

The University Arena, the university's sports center, completed in 2001, is Ireland's largest sports hall. The Irish Chamber Orchestra is located in the university concert hall (completed in 2008) .
