Campus buildings and institutes
The oldest part of the university, The Quadrangle, was built during the Great Famine and is a replica of a University of Oxford building . This building also houses the impressive Auditorium Maximum , which is still in use .
The newer parts of the building were built in the 1970s. The architects Scott, Tallon, Walker are responsible for this. Extensive renovation work and new construction of building complexes are currently taking place.
The university campus extends right on the west bank of the Corrib River ; it is spacious and green.
The main building of the university forms the quadrangle. This is where the administration and the president are located , as well as some classrooms (maximum auditorium).
A yellow sculpture of modern arts forms the center of the campus. The library , the entrance to the actual university wing, the so-called Concours (with Tower 1 and 2, as well as numerous seminar rooms and lecture halls), and the Arts Millennium Building are located at this place . The latter won the CIF Construction Excellence Award in 2000 (see photos and drawings below) and is home to the Italian, German, French, Spanish and English departments. A branch of the Bank of Ireland is also located in the main wing. Below the central square there is a cafeteria , a bookstore, a hairdresser and a Students' Union shop.
The Áras na Mac Léinn is home to a pub , a theater, a sports hall with a climbing wall , a fitness center, the Students' Union and medical care for students.
The MRI (Martin Ryan Institute) was founded in 1992 and combines marine biology research in zoology, botany, molecular biology and the Seaweed Center under one roof. There is also a small chapel on campus . Some courses take place in mobile accommodation. Numerous parking spaces and bicycle racks are available.
Campus life
Simple Internet access with your own notebook is made possible by the coverage of the entire building complex with W-LAN . Around 500 computer workstations are also available to students.
