The Bank of Ireland ( Irish : Banc na hÉireann ) is officially known as the Governor and Company of the Bank of Ireland . It is a bank with corporate headquarters in Dublin . The company is one of the five largest banks in Ireland and Northern Ireland and is listed on the ISE . The core of today's company is the Bank of Ireland, founded in 1783 by a Royal Charter . The private sector institution is neither a subsidiary nor a historical spin-off of the Central Bank and Financial Services Authority of Ireland . The company is a member of the ISEQ Overall Index on the Irish Stock Exchange . The Bank of Ireland is one of four commercial banks (Bank of Ireland, First Trust Bank , Northern Bank , Ulster Bank ) that are allowed to print Northern Irish banknotes .

The bank was founded in 1783 by a law of the Irish Parliament to promote public and private finances. The Huguenot David la Touche was the first head of the institution. Like the Bank of Scotland, the Bank of Ireland fulfilled a wide variety of functions, but never that of the central bank .
From the beginning of the Irish Free State in 1922 until December 31, 1971, the institute was a kind of house bank for the Irish state. The Hibernian Bank was in 1958 taken over , and in 1965 was followed by the National Bank of Ireland .
In the wake of the financial crisis in 2008, a real estate bubble burst in Ireland as well , which resulted in write-downs in the billions for the Bank of Ireland. In 2009 the institute finally received a government capital injection of € 3.5 billion.
In addition to the British Isles market, the company is also represented in Germany , Canada , Japan , the USA and Australia .
