Winkhausen is a district of the city of Schmallenberg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

The village is about five kilometers east of Schmallenberg. The federal road 236 leads through the village and flows the Lenne . In the center of the village, the Sorpe , coming from the Sorpe Valley , joins the Lenne.

Neighboring places are Almert , Grafschaft , Gleidorf , Niedersorpe and Oberkirchen .

history

"Widinchusen" was first mentioned in 1395. The place name is formed from the personal name Wido and -inghusen (High German: -inghausen ) and was shortened to Winkhausen. A legend tells that the Saxon king Widukind is said to have pitched an army camp here around 800 in order to storm the ramparts on the Wilzenberg from there .

Winkhausen is located on the former Heidenstrasse . In the first known tax register from 1536 7 farms were named. In 1645 Widickhusen was mapped on the Westphalia Ducatus map. In 1663, Winkhausen was referred to as the "ugly hamlet" in the travel diary Voyage d'Allemagne of Mr. von Monconys , published in 1665/66 .

In 1895, 104 inhabitants lived in Winkhausen, according to the entry in the trade and business address book of the province of Westphalia. The place belonged to the municipality of Oberkirchen until the municipal territorial reform. Since January 1st, 1975 Winkhausen has been part of the extended town of Schmallenberg.

The population is predominantly Catholic. In the village is the chapel of St. Katharina (Oberkirchen parish). The Protestant Christians belong to the Gleidorf parish.

economy

Agricultural and handicraft businesses and a hotel are located in Winkhausen.

Sports

There is a golf course in the village . In 2013 the golf course was expanded from 18 to 27 holes.
