history

Gellinghausen was first mentioned in 1280 (Hermannus de Gelinghusen). Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register for the year 1543. According to this, there were seven subject to appraisal in “Gellinghaußen”; the number should have agreed with the farms or houses that existed at the time. The connecting road between Ramsbeck and Fredeburg , which ran through the middle of Gellinghausen, was built in 1860. Four years later (1864) there was a big fire in the village. The first telegraph lines were laid in 1887. In 1889 Gellinghausen received a post office. A year later (1890) the school building was built and in 1895 the water pipe was built. 79 years after the school building was built, the village school closed (1969).

Until the municipal reorganization in North Rhine-Westphalia, Gellinghausen belonged to the municipality of Bödefeld-Land . Gellinghausen has been part of the town of Schmallenberg since January 1st, 1975.
