history

The name Gleidorf was first mentioned in 1072 in a document from the Grafschaft monastery . Until the municipal reorganization, Gleidorf belonged to the municipality of Grafschaft. Since the municipal territorial reform on January 1, 1975, Gleidorf has been part of the extended town of Schmallenberg.

There is a primary school and a kindergarten as well as a public Catholic library in the village. The secondary schools are located in the neighboring towns of Schmallenberg and Bad Fredeburg.

Churches

In 1873 a Protestant church was built in the western part of Gleidorf, which was destroyed by American artillery fire shortly before the end of the Second World War. Between 1947 and 1949 a new, somewhat larger church was built on the same site. The round altar window was designed by the Wittgenstein artist Wolfgang Kreutter . The church has been called the Church of the Resurrection since 2008.

The old Catholic parish church, which had been built in 1905/06 with insufficient funds, quickly turned out to be dilapidated. The new Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was consecrated in 1984. In May 2009, the consecration of a historic organ from London was celebrated there. This pipe organ by the well-known organ builder GM Holdich dates from 1872. It was completely restored by a local organ builder and installed in the Gleidorf church.

On the outskirts of Gleidorf in the direction of Fredeburg, at an elevated point, at the confluence of the Burbecke and the Gleierbach, the Friedenskapelle stands. It was built in 1858 to be used as a place of worship for the residents of Gleidorf. Because the parish church was rebuilt in 1906–1908, the chapel was no longer used. Only recently has the chapel been repaired and consecrated again with the help of many Gleidorf residents. Since then it has served as a place of worship again.

societies

In Gleidorf there are various clubs, including the TV Gleidorf (association league in apparatus gymnastics), the FC Gleidorf-Holthausen, the HuWi Cross Team, the Gleidorf shooting club, the Easter fire club, the Gleidorf music club, the Cologne fan club Echte11 etc.
