Niedersorpe is a district of the city of Schmallenberg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Niedersorpe is around 3 km east of Gleidorf and 1 km south of Burgberg (628 m) at 420 to 480 m above sea level. The Sorpe , which gave the place and other places in the Sorpe Valley its name, flows through Niedersorpe.

history

In 1072 Sorpe (then Suropo) was first mentioned in a deed of the monastery Grafschaft . It is not clear whether the entire Sorpetal or only Niedersorpe was meant. There were further documentary mentions under the name of Niedersorpe in 1338, 1465 and 1485. In 1645 Nederen Sarepe was mapped on the Westphalia Ducatus map. In 1738 the village chapel was built. In 1895, 175 residents lived in the village of Niedersorpe, according to the entry in the trade and business address book of the Province of Westphalia. Niedersorpe belonged to the municipality of Oberkirchen until the municipal territorial reform in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since January 1st, 1975, Niedersorpe has been part of the extended town of Schmallenberg.

St. Sebastian Chapel in Niedersorpe

Already in 1571 there was a church yard in the village. The existing Martins Chapel was inaugurated in 1739, one year after its construction, by the Count Abbot Josias. During the last renovation of the Martins Chapel in 2005, remains of an older chapel and ceramic pieces were found. The ceramic pieces found date from the 13th to 14th centuries. The current patron saint of the chapel is St. Sebastian.

Agricultural and handicraft businesses and two inns are located in Niedersorpe.

In 1995, Niedersorpe won federal gold in the national competition “ Our village should be more beautiful ”.
