history

The name Sögtrop is made up of the dialect words "Sög" (for sow) and "Trop" (for village). Sögtrop was first mentioned in a document in 1225. The place was the aristocratic seat of the Lords of Sögtrop (then von Söchtrop ), who lived here in a small castle. At that time, the gentlemen von Hanxleden and the gentlemen von Sögtrop founded a parish office. The pastor's office (today Kirchrarbach) was built on the estate borders on the Rarbach. Early clues about the name Sögtrop (at that time Seuchtrop) result from an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 3 persons subject to appraisal in the place Sögtrop.

The von Sögtrop family died out in 1694. Subsequently, a von Rietesel family acquired the castle, which was now also called "von Sögtrop". The estate was later sold to a middle-class family. After 1900 parts of the castle were still standing. Presumably the remains of the castle were included in what is now the Wüllner House (called Borg).

Sögtrop belonged to the municipality of Rarbach until the municipal reform of the municipality . On January 1, 1975, Sögtrop became part of the new town of Schmallenberg.

In 2018 the village was the state winner in the competition “ Our village has a future ”. Sögtrop therefore took part in the national competition “Our village has a future” in 2019 and was able to secure the silver medal here.

religion

The St. Blaise Chapel is in the village. The chapel is said to have belonged to the Lords of Sögtrop in the 13th century. In 1889 the Way of the Cross was built. The old dilapidated chapel was demolished in 1930. A new church was built at the same place. The new chapel was consecrated on December 1, 1931 and renovated in 1991/92.

The Evangelical Filial Community of Kirchrarbach built a branch chapel in Sögtrop in 1951/52. The chapel was consecrated on November 1, 1952. In the following years, numerous Protestant families left the community. Because of this, the community sold the chapel to the Christian Scouting Group in Lünen in February 1971. The building was then converted into a residential building.
