Albert Karl Hömberg (mostly Albert K. Hömberg or Albert Hömberg , internationally also Hoemberg ; born February 3, 1905 in Witten , † January 29, 1963 in Telgte ) was a German historian .

Life

Albert Karl Hömberg was born on February 3, 1905 as the son of the textile merchant Heinrich Hömberg in Witten. On his father's side, his roots extend to Fredeburg in the Sauerland . His father had moved from there to Witten before Albert was born. During Hömberg's youth, the family regularly spent their holidays with their relatives in Fredeburg.

After leaving school, Hömberg first studied natural sciences , mathematics and physics . During this time he was already busy researching and presenting history. In 1928 the town history of Fredeburg became the first object of his historical interest. Due to illness, he changed his studies in 1930. In Berlin , under Professor Walther Vogel , he became a specialist in settlement history during his student days . In 1936 he received his doctorate from the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin with a dissertation on the history of settlements of the upper Sauerland as a doctor of philosophy (Dr. phil.) . He then received a grant from the German Research Foundation .

In 1938 Albert Hömberg married his Canadian friend Elisabeth Sims. In 1939 his son Philipp R. Hömberg was born, who later worked as a prehistorian. Two years later his second son H. Peter Hömberg and in 1944 his daughter A. Beata Hömberg were born. From 1936 to 1939 Hömberg contributed to the Historical Atlas for Germany . In the war years from 1940 to 1945 he served as a private in the Luftwaffe . During this time his brother Heinrich was sent to a concentration camp . Albert K. Hömberg, who himself was an opponent of the Nazi state, was taken prisoner of war for one year in 1945 . His wife published the book "Thy People, My People" five years later. In it she described the last days of the war in the Münsterland.

Hömberg then lived in Münster on orders from the Historical Commission for Westphalia . In 1952 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the University of Münster , where in 1962 the first chair for national history was established for him. In the same year until his death in 1963, Hömberg was first chairman of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .

Albert K. Hömberg died in Telgte at the age of 57.
