Location of the city of Telgte in the Warendorf district | ||

Telgte (pronunciation: [ ˈtɛlktə ], regional [ tɛlçtə ]; Low German Teegte ) is a town in the Warendorf district in the Münsterland ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). Telgte is about twelve kilometers east of Münster on the Ems . The city is known as a place of pilgrimage (large Marian pilgrimage from Osnabrück to Telgte - Telgter pilgrimage ) and through a story by Günter Grass ( The meeting in Telgte ) .
geography
Neighboring communities
Telgte borders on Münster , Greven , Ostbevern , Warendorf and Everswinkel (starting clockwise in the west).
Districts
Telgte is divided into the core city and the two districts Westbevern -Dorf and Westbevern- Vadrup .
Westbevern (population: approx. 4000; area: 24.46 km²) was an independently administered municipality with the parts Dorf , Vadrup and Brock until 1974 (Brock has belonged to the municipality of Ostbevern since the municipal territorial reform). The Bever flows through Westbevern as a tributary of the Ems . An attractive destination is Haus Langen with a former double mill on the Bever. The neo-Gothic church of St. Cornelius and Cyprian has been part of the parish community of St. Marien (Telgte and Westbevern) for several years.
history
The region around Telgte was already populated by Saxon tribes in post-Roman times . In the course of the Saxon mission by Charlemagne , this area was Christianized. Ludgerus , the first bishop of Münster , had a church built in Telgte. This original parish church was probably made of wood.
Telgte developed at a fork in the trade routes coming from the south towards the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, as the Ems could be crossed at a ford here . There were originally two farms with the names Frankenfurt and Telgoth. Telgte, which was first called Telgoth, then Telget and Telgith and finally Telgte, only gradually grew into a city.
The place received city rights in 1238 and belonged to the Hanse merchants' association.
There were several major fires around 1500. The old church perished in one of these fires. Telgte suffered from the plague three times , and in 1599 more than half of the population died here.
At the time of the Anabaptists , the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Franz von Waldeck, was given accommodation until he had recaptured "his" city.
The Telgte Jewish Community existed until 1941 . The synagogue was destroyed in 1938 and the cemetery leveled in 1942. Today, memorial plaques in these places commemorate the Jewish history of Telgtes.
On July 1, 1968, the parish parish Telgte was incorporated into the city of Telgte. Westbevern (without Brock ) followed on January 1, 1975.

mayor
On December 13th, 2009 Dietrich Meendermann was voted out of office as mayor because he received only 49.8% of the votes in the repeat election. In the original election on August 30, 2009, he still received 50.5% of the vote, although, as in the December election, he had no opposing candidate. This election had to be repeated, however, because some of the ballot papers were accidentally destroyed before they were evaluated. A new mayor was then elected on May 9, 2010. Wolfgang Pieper, the candidate of the Greens, prevailed with 71.5% of the votes cast against the candidate Ingo Deitmer, who was supported by the CDU and SPD.
Mayor elections were held again on April 17, 2016, and the current mayor, Wolfgang Pieper, was re-elected with 79.2% of the vote. Telgte remained the only city in North Rhine-Westphalia with a green mayor.

Museums
- Under the name RELíGIO - Westphalian Museum for Religious Culture , the former Museum Heimathaus Münsterland and the Nativity Museum were merged with a common concept. The name has existed since 2011, the new conception of the museum dates back to 2012. The RELíGIO museum is the first museum of religion in Germany to present world religions, denominations and denominational differences, religious festivals, the history of the Telgter pilgrimage, the life and work of a cardinal on over 1000 square meters von Galens and the important Telgter Hunger cloth from 1623.
- The grain distillery museum is a technical monument that allows a detailed insight into the history of the Munsterland grain distillery. In the building built in 1900, production continued until 1979. The technical system is almost completely preserved. A gallery on the second floor offers space for exhibitions of contemporary art.
Buildings
- The pilgrimage chapel , a Lady Chapel, is a baroque , octagonal central building from around 1650. The goal of the pilgrimages is the Telgter miraculous image , a Pietà (sculpture of Mary with the body of Jesus ) in this chapel. According to legend, it is said to be carved out of the Marienlinde (an old city gate tree).
- The provost church of St. Clemens , built between 1522 and 1558, is a Gothic hall church . It is located on the Ems and in close proximity to the pilgrimage chapel.
- Christoph-Bernsmeyer-Haus : To the north of the provost church there is a striking building, the so-called Great Mill , directly on the Emswehr . There was a mill in Telgte very early on. On the left side of the Ems behind the church stood the large grain mill (today's Christoph-Bernsmeyer-Haus), on the right bank was the oil and fulling mill, which was demolished around 1900. The large, well-adorned coat of arms stone on the gable of the Great Mill contains a chronogram with the year 1754 in the first two lines. The Westphalian baroque master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun was involved in the planning of the renovation work .
- This former grain mill was thoroughly renovated in 1976/77 and taken over by the Mauritz Franciscan Sisters , whose founder, Father Johann Christoph Bernsmeyer (1777-1858), was for a long time vicar in Telgte and therefore gave the house its name. The building was a convalescent home for Franciscan Sisters until 2014 and now houses a priory of the Maria Stella Matutina Sisters , a contemplative religious community.
- Emsstraße 25 , half-timbered building , built around 1600
- Herrenstraße 7 , half-timbered building from the second half of the 17th century, originally built as a vicarage house
- Königstraße 35 , single-storey half-timbered building built in 1500, which was rebuilt several times
- Markt 4 , brick eaves house from 1778
- Ritterstraße 2 , one-storey half-timbered building with a gable that protrudes twice over a dew band , built around 1600
- Ritterstraße 4 , the single-storey half-timbered building, the gable of which protrudes twice over Knaggen, was built in 1625
- Steinstrasse 4 , Speicher, built around 1500
Tree monument
- Marienlinde
The Marienlinde is an approx. 750 year old, listed summer linden tree and is one of the oldest trees in Germany. The tree veteran stands at the northern city gate, the Münstertor. The linden tree takes its name from the image of Mary that is said to have been carved from its wood.
