August Lütke-Westhues
August Lütke-Westhues (born July 25, 1926 in Westbevern ; † September 1, 2000 ) was a German eventing rider who won two Olympic silver medals in 1956.
Life
August Lütke-Westhues was born as August Hohenbrink. In 1947 the family changed the name to the mother's farm name. He belonged to the Gustav Rau riding club in Telgte. August Lütke-Westhues began riding in the late 1940s. In 1953 he won his first German championship title, followed by a second title in 1956. In 1954, together with Wilhelm Büsing and Klaus Wagner, he won the silver medal at the European Championships behind the British team.
At the Olympic Equestrian Games in Stockholm in 1956 , Lütke-Westhues rode on Trux von Kamax to second place in the individual ranking behind the Swede Petrus Kastenman . Lütke-Westhues also won the silver medal in the team competition together with Otto Rothe and Klaus Wagner, while gold went to the British. The British also won the European Championships in 1957, August Lütke-Westhues won silver again on Franko together with Siegfried Dehning and Reiner Klimke . Lütke-Westhues also won silver in the individual competition in 1957, gold went to Sheila Wilcox . In 1959 at the European Championships in Harewood, the German team succeeded in defeating the British. Lütke-Westhues, Dehning, Ottokar Pohlmann and Klimke rode in the European championship team.
In 1961 Lütke-Westhues ended his sporting career and concentrated on his farm. In addition, he took on honorary posts in his riding club, whose chairman he became in 1965, and in the association. From 1989 he was chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia Equestrian Association.
His brother Alfons Lütke-Westhues was 1956 Olympic champion with the German show jumping team.
