Reiner Klimke
Reiner Klimke (born January 14, 1936 in Münster ; † August 17, 1999 ibid) was a successful German dressage and eventing rider and politician ( CDU ). He is one of the most successful summer Olympians . For many years he was the most successful Olympic participant in Germany until he was replaced by Birgit Fischer at the 2000 Summer Olympics . Klimke was the world's most victorious dressage rider for a long time before he was replaced by Isabell Werth .
He was named Sportsman of the Year at the Sports Ball in 1974, 1981, 1982 and 1988 by the Sports Association of the City of Münster. The sports association of the city of Münster honored him with the sports Oscar in 2000.
In 2008 Reiner Klimke was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports . He was also a holder of the Silver Laurel Leaf and the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .
Eventing rider
Klimke began riding in 1948 at the Westphalian Riding and Driving School in Münster. He gained his first tournament experience in eventing in Paderborn in 1950 , followed by his first international appearance in Thun in 1955 . At the European Eventing Championships in Copenhagen in 1957 , he won the silver medal, and in 1959 the gold medal in Harewood House , each in the team competition. In 1960 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rome and won the German championship.
Dressage rider
At the Olympic Games he won a total of six gold and two bronze medals. He was world champion six times and European champion eleven times. At the Olympic Games in 1988 he was the flag bearer of the German team at the opening ceremony .
His most successful and well-known horse was Ahlerich , with whom he was able to win Olympic victories, world and European championships and seven German championships .
In 1984 he was awarded the FN gold medal with laurel, Olympic rings and diamonds. In 1986 he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown Münster . There a street was named after him on the Sentruper Höhe. He is the father of the dressage rider Michael Klimke and the dressage and eventing rider Ingrid Klimke .
education and profession
After graduating from high school in 1955, he studied law and political science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, and was awarded a Dr. jur. obtained his doctorate and then worked as an independent lawyer and notary. During his studies he became a member of the fraternity of the Pflüger Halle zu Münster, to which he remained closely connected throughout his life.
Party and MP
He had been a member of the CDU since 1950. He was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from May 31, 1990 to May 31, 1995. There he was deputy chairman of the sports committee.
Last years
Until his death, Klimke worked on a comeback planned for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. On August 17, 1999, Klimke died at the age of 63 as a result of his second heart attack . His grave is in the Münster Central Cemetery .
