Sandra Auffarth (born December 27, 1986 in Delmenhorst ) is a German rider who achieved her greatest successes in eventing .

Career

Second place in her first CCI 4 *: Sandra Auffarth with Opgun Louvo , Luhmühlen 2011

Sandra Auffarth grew up surrounded by horses, her parents run a training and trading stable in Bergedorf near Ganderkesee . She actually wanted to specialize in show jumping, but at her mother's insistence she also rode dressage. Her first national successes in eventing followed as a pony rider, and in 2000 she was sixth at the German championship of pony eventing riders. Even after switching to large horses, she remained successful, becoming German vice-champion in 2004 as a junior and a year later as a young rider, German champion in her age group.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Warendorf in 2006. Here she was part of the DOKR's perspective group and trained as a horse manager , which she completed as the best of the year. This was followed by training as a sports and fitness clerk at the German Equestrian Association .

In 2007, Sandra Auffarth took over the five-year-old gelding Opgun Louvo from the Belgian eventing rider Myriam Meylemans . She continued to train him and with him achieved third place in the 2009 World Championship for seven-year-old eventing horses. In 2010, the first starts at CIC 3 * level followed.

In 2011, Sandra Auffarth moved back to her parents' farm, where she works as a horse host. In the summer of that year, Auffarth played her first CCI 4 * of her career, the CCI Luhmühlen , surprisingly she came second with Opgun Louvo .

As a result, Auffarth was nominated for the first championship in the "rider" age group, the 2011 European Eventing Championships . At this championship, which was also held in Luhmühlen, Sandra Auffarth and Opgun Louvo were able to convince again, finished second in the individual ranking and won the gold medal with the German team.

At the beginning of 2012 there was a moment of shock for Auffarth: During a preparatory exam early in the season, as part of a medication check, caffeine was found in the blood of one of her young horses , which is considered an illegal medication. However, Auffarth was able to prove that contaminated feed was the reason for the positive result, so that the proceedings against her were discontinued. The year was otherwise a successful one for Auffarth. Accordingly, Auffarth was nominated with Opgun Louvo for her first Olympic Games , where she was part of the victorious German team and also won bronze in the individual.

The mare Corona ridden by her won the Bundeschampionat for 5-year-old eventing horses in September 2012 . In November 2012, she and 163 other athletes were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf .

Sandra Auffarth celebrated her greatest individual success at the World Equestrian Games in August 2014 when she won the individual gold medal together with her French gelding Opgun Louvo . As part of the German team, she also became a team world champion. In 2015 she won the silver medal behind Michael Jung at the European Championships at Blair Castle and took the title with the team. At the Luhmühlen eventing in June 2016, she secured victory with Opgun Louvo , which at the same time earned her the German championship title for the first time.

Due to an injury to the handle leg in February 2017, the season opener for Opgun Louvo was delayed , so Auffarth ruled out participation in the European Championship. Nevertheless, Sandra Auffarth and Opgun Louvo won a medal in 2017, they finished third in the German championship. In 2017, Auffarth rode the Hanoverian stallion Gentleman again as the Bundeschampion of the 5-year-old eventing horses at the Federal Championships, and a year later both of them also won the 6-year-old eventing horses.
