Horst Karsten

Horst Karsten (born January 1, 1936 in Elsfleth ) is a former German eventing rider who won two medals in three Olympic starts.

Horst Karsten started eventing in 1956. In 1964 he was able to qualify together with Fritz Ligges and Gerhard Schulz for the all-German team at the 1964 Olympic Games . This team was one of the few teams within the Olympic contingent that was really all-German, Horst Karsten from Lower Saxony and Fritz Ligges from Westphalia were farmers from the Federal Republic of Germany, Gerhard Schulz belonged to the mounted border police of the German Democratic Republic. In Tokyo, Horst Karsten took sixth place in the individual ranking on a Condora . Together, the three riders won the bronze medal in the team competition behind the teams from Italy and the United States.

After the end of the all-German team, Horst Karsten represented the Federal Republic of Germany at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City on Adagio, together with Jochen Mehrdorf and Klaus Wagner . As the best-placed German rider, Horst Karsten came in 11th, the team came in fifth. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Karsten and Sioux were nominated for the German team. He took the lead in the dressage standings, but had to give up on the cross-country ride. Together with Karl Schultz , Harry Klugmann and Lutz Goessing , Horst Karsten received the bronze medal behind the teams from the United Kingdom and the United States in the team competition. In 1974 Horst Karsten won bronze at the World Cup with the German team. In 1965, 1973 and 1977 Horst Karsten received the bronze medal in the individual ranking at the European Championships . In the team championship he won gold in 1973, silver in 1977 and bronze in 1969 and 1975.

Horst Karsten belonged to the Ganderkesee equestrian club . He won the German championship title in 1963, 1965, 1973, 1977 and 1981. In 1963 he won on Condora , followed by second place on Hanko . After being a member of the German team at 14 international championships, Horst Karsten took over the office of national coach in 1986. During his tenure, the German eventing equipe won gold at the 1988 Olympic Games and bronze at the 1992 Olympic Games and the 1990 and 1994 World Championships.

In March 1989 he was awarded the title of "Riding Master". In 2007 Horst Karsten was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international association of eventing riders as the first German.

He was also awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on December 11, 1964.
