Gerhard Schulz (rider)

Gerhard Schulz (born June 1, 1931 in Hartensdorf ; † October 2, 2008 ) was a German rider of the GDR who won the bronze medal in the team competition at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo with the all-German Olympic team.

Sporting development

After joining the German People's Police , Schulz came to SC Dynamo Hoppegarten via the mounted border police of the GDR .

As a show jumper , he was in the final of the GDR championship several times. However, he achieved his first championship title in eventing . In this discipline he achieved his greatest successes. He was a member of the military teams of the All-German Olympic teams for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and 1964 in Tokyo. In 1960 he was the best German with 14th place in the individual competition on his thoroughbred mare Wanderlilli . In 1964 he won bronze with the team on his Hungarian half- breed Balca and took 20th place in the individual ranking. In 1963 and 1964 Schulz won his 3rd and 4th GDR championship titles in the military. He was supported as a rider by Andreas Pechstein, the father of the later speed skater Claudia Pechstein .

After the equestrian department at SC Dynamo Hoppegarten was closed, he went to LPG Berlin-Wartenberg , where he worked as a brigadier and as a trainer in the equestrian section . Here he brought the riders Norbert Köpke and Wolfgang Bartelt to GDR championship honors.
