Wartenberg is a district in the Lichtenberg district of Berlin . In linguistic usage, the old village center is usually not meant, but the new Wartenberg development area, which belongs to the neighboring district of Neu-Hohenschönhausen and is located on the former field mark of Wartenberg.

location

Wartenberg is located in the northern part of the Lichtenberg district. The district borders on the neighboring districts of Malchow , Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Falkenberg as well as the Brandenburg district of Barnim .

history

New church of the Berlin-Wartenberg community in Neu-Hohenschönhausen

Margrave Albrecht the Bear brought new settlers to Brandenburg from 1157, particularly from the Altmark , the Harz , Flanders and the Rhine regions. The newcomers often took the geographical names (place names) of their homeland with them and founded anger villages and street villages (such as Wartenberg and Falkenberg). In this way, Wartenberg (there are places with the same name in the Altmark) was also created around 1230.

The construction of the former village church of Wartenberg is dated to the time of 1250 . Until its destruction in 1945, the building was one of the most beautiful village churches in Berlin, but some inventory items, such as the Marien Altar , were removed before the destruction and can be viewed today in the Hohenschönhauser Taborkirche and the Märkisches Museum .

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1270: Bernhardus de Wardenberge was mentioned in a document from the Brandenburg margraves . Around 100 years later, it was mentioned again in Charles IV's land register . In it the possessions of Wartenberg were given: in 1375 there were 53  Hufen , of which three belonged to the village pastor and one to the village church. There were also eight cottages , a jug and a fiefdom .

Until 1448 the village was owned by several citizens of Berlin and Cölln , including the Blankenfelde and Boytin families . After the " Berlin displeasure " they lost their possessions to Elector Friedrich II. (Called "Eisenzahn"), who in turn distributed them to loyal vassals , including the noble Röbel family, who also owned the surrounding villages of Hohenschönhausen and Buch . In 1451 the village was divided into two manors .

In 1783, the Prussian Minister of State Otto von Voss acquired the Wartenberg estate, put the two manors back together and had a new manor house built with a farm building. After his death in 1823 his three sons inherited the estate, his eldest son Carl became the sole ruler of Wartenberg after the death of the two younger ones.

The city of Berlin bought the Wartenberg estate in 1882 and began building sewer fields . The estate itself became the Vorwerk of the Malchow estate. The incorporation followed in 1920 with the Greater Berlin Act ; Wartenberg now became a part of what was then the 18th  administrative district of Weißensee .

On April 21, 1945, the village church was blown up by members of the Wehrmacht , as otherwise it could have served as an orientation for the advancing Red Army . Despite the demolition, it reached the village center around 10:30 a.m. on the same day, which is also one of the first border crossings in Berlin.

Structurally, Wartenberg is designed very differently. For example, there are high-rise buildings in panel construction , which were built in the 1980s, directly at the Wartenberg S-Bahn station . There are numerous newly built single-family houses around the “Wartenberger Hof” restaurant and there are still old farms in the center of the village . To the north of the settlement, the Wartenberger Feldmark landscape park has been developed as a recreational area on the former sewage fields since 2000 .

Economy, culture and education

The Wartenberg Engineering School, which existed in the former manor house until 1990, was wound up, the buildings were renovated and converted and the complex was supplemented by a residential park with row, double and single-family houses. After the reunification, new small businesses emerged around domestic services such as a carpentry, a heating and plumbing company, a garden building yard, and a car workshop.

On the forecourt of the Wartenberg S-Bahn station, the Lichtenberg Environment Office and the District Office organize the Wartenberg Spring Festival . This is a hands-on event where visitors can find out more about all questions relating to environmental protection and take action themselves. In the district there is a primary school as well as the former training area for the police and fire brigade of Berlin in Astridstrasse, which has been converted into an industrial area.

traffic

Wartenberg is conveniently located on the Berlin outer ring . The district is served by two bus routes. With line 256 of the BVG there are travel options to Lichtenberg and Alt- and Neu-Hohenschönhausen, with line 893 of the Barnimer bus company there is a connection via Lindenberg to Buch . The Wartenberg train station with S-Bahn connections to downtown Berlin is also just across the border to the new development area . Until 2002 this area belonged to Wartenberg.

The most important streets in the district are Dorfstraße with connections to Neu-Hohenschönhausen, Falkenberg, Malchow and the city center, as well as Lindenberger Straße to the Berlin area.
