The Wartenberger Feldmark landscape park in east Berlin is located in the Wartenberg district in the Lichtenberg district . It was created from 2000 in several sections on sections of former sewage fields as a result of a Senate competition.

history

The area of today's landscape park was acquired by the city of Berlin together with other areas around Malchow and Wartenberg in 1883. After the creation of drainage ditches and a sophisticated drainage system , the areas served as sewage fields for cleaning the wastewater . The associated high nutrient input turned out to be the ideal basis for arable farming. Over the decades, however, the pollution increased, so that agricultural use had to be temporarily stopped. From 1968 onwards, a sewage treatment plant took over the wastewater treatment and the drainage areas could be leveled. Partial areas were rededicated as building land and apartments were built on it. Fruit and vegetables were grown again on another part. Additional areas were reforested for the 750th anniversary of Berlin .

In 2000, the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment held an ideas and implementation competition in Wartenberger Feldmark . Under the motto “landscape with a view”, a “recreation area on the outskirts, taking into account sustainable agricultural use and areas valuable for nature conservation” should be created. A park on the outskirts of the city was planned to serve as a recreational area for the residents of Hohenschönhausen . The landscape office plancontext won the competition endowed with 150,000  marks . The jury's jury praised the plans with the words: "All in all, the design offers an exemplary contribution to the topic of landscape development in northeast Berlin and combines agricultural requirements, landscape maintenance and recreational use to create a usable and coherent landscape ensemble."

In the first phase of production up to the end of 2002, four million marks were built in, most of which came from the Deutsche Bahn budget for compensatory measures. Developed paths are lined with maple and are aimed equally at hikers, cyclists or skaters , for whom rest areas have been set up.

Finally, a 210-  hectare landscape park was created as part of the Berlin Barnim .

Park description

At the southern entrance there is a radial garden made of cherry trees , which was laid out shortly after reunification as a "symbol of peace and the sun" and integrated into the plans. A Japanese gate by the sculptor Wolfgang Stübner forms the center. (Tradition has it that the wishes of those who walk through it at sunrise are fulfilled.) Scottish Highland cattle are raised in a pasture .
