The Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing (SenSW for short) is one of ten specialist administrations of the Berlin Senate with the status of a state ministry and as such part of the state government as well as the highest state authority responsible for urban development and housing policy in the German capital .

Sebastian Scheel ( Die Linke ) has been Senator for Urban Development and Housing since August 20, 2020 . The Senator is supported by the State Secretaries Regula Lüscher ( Senate Building Director ) and Wenke Christoph (State Secretary for Housing).

Competencies

The Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing is responsible for questions of housing construction, rental policy, urban planning and development as well as spatial planning in the German capital. Berlin's transport and road construction policy, on the other hand, is the responsibility of the Senate Administration for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection .

Urban Development Senators since 1981

On June 11, 1981, the department was newly formed as the Senate Department for Urban Development and Environmental Protection from the business areas “Urban Planning” of the Senate Department for Building and Housing and “Environmental Protection” of the Senate Department for Health and Environmental Protection.
