The Senate Müller II is since 8 December 2016 , the state government of Berlin . It is the first red-red-green state government in the Federal Republic that is led by the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). The Senate has eleven members, two more than in the previous Senate Müller , a coalition of the SPD and the CDU , which lost its majority in the elections for the Berlin House of Representatives on September 18, 2016 .

In addition to the governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD), four senate members belong to the SPD, three from the Left and three from the Greens .

The maximum number of senators had been increased from eight to ten after a change in the state constitution. Among other things, the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment has been divided between the new departments Urban Development and Housing as well as Environment, Climate Protection and Transport. In addition, the Culture and Europe department was spun off from the Senate Chancellery, while the Science and Research department was integrated into the Senate Chancellery. The governing mayor also directs the latter.

The state secretaries listed are not members of the Senate and are independent of their term of office. As a rule, the state secretaries are civil servants for life, in exceptional cases initially civil servants on probation. As political civil servants, you can take temporary retirement at any time without giving a reason or - if you have not yet reached the pension entitlement - be dismissed from civil servant status.
