The 18th election to the Berlin House of Representatives took place on September 18, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The district council assemblies were also elected at the same time . As a result of the election to the House of Representatives, which unusually ended with five similarly strong parties, a coalition was formed from the SPD , the Left and the Greens , the first nationwide red-red-green coalition under the SPD leadership. At 21.6%, the SPD's share of the vote marked the smallest election victory of a party in the history of the German elections to a state parliament.

Starting position

It was the first election for the incumbent Governing Mayor Michael Müller as the top candidate, who took over this office from Klaus Wowereit on December 11, 2014 and since then has held government responsibility with Senate Müller I in a grand coalition.

Candidates

Parties and - in the constituencies  - individual applicants could run for election. Parties that did not participate in the last House of Representatives election in 2011 or in Berlin in the last Bundestag election in 2013 had to report their participation to the State Returning Officer by May 18, 2016 in order to have their party status determined. With the exception of the parties already represented in the House of Representatives - SPD, CDU, Greens, Left and Pirates - the parties had to submit 2200 support signatures for the state list or 185 signatures per district list by July 12, 2016  . The state election committee allowed 32 parties to vote. 25 parties submitted state or district lists, 21 of which were approved. 17 parties competed across Berlin, four only in individual districts.
