Election poster of the CDU

The 1963 election for the Berlin House of Representatives took place on February 17, 1963 and was the first election in Berlin after the Wall was built .

The top candidate of the SPD was again the governing mayor Willy Brandt , for the CDU again his deputy, mayor Franz Amrehn , stood.

The SPD experienced a great election victory: with 61.9% of the vote and a rise in votes of 9.3 percentage points, it achieved its second-best result since the end of the war. It also managed to win all 80 direct mandates and even to achieve a two-thirds majority in 5 of the 12 city districts . Your previous coalition partner, the CDU, fell by 8.9 percentage points to 28.8% of the vote, while the FDP returned to the House of Representatives with 7.9% (plus 4.1 percentage points) .

With the high election victory of the SPD, according to the analysis of the election researchers, the Berliners expressed their great satisfaction with the SPD and Brandt's energetic demeanor in connection with the construction of the wall, while the CDU was punished for its crisis management, which many voters found unconvincing.

Last but not least, the fact that Willy Brandt had to cancel a meeting with the Soviet General Secretary Khrushchev shortly before the election due to pressure from the CDU was negatively blamed on the Union, as the prevailing view was that the chance to relax was untried.

The CDU then went into the opposition , while Brandt, despite an absolute majority, formed a coalition with the FDP.
