The governing mayor Klaus Schütz , who was in the awkward position of having to rule over the life of his challenger, ran for the SPD for the second time . After the federal government gave in to the demands and five prisoners, accompanied by the former Berlin mayor Heinrich Albertz in South Yemen were flown, Lorenz came two days off after the election.
The SPD lost 7.8 percentage points in the election and with 42.6% of the votes its position as the strongest political force and the absolute majority it had held since 1954 .
