Election poster of the CDU with top candidate Lorenz

The election to the Berlin House of Representatives on March 2, 1975 was marked by the kidnapping of the CDU - top candidate Peter Lorenz , who took the second time after the 1,971th Lorenz was kidnapped three days before the election by terrorists of the June 2 Movement, who demanded the release of six convicted criminals from the Red Army Faction and the June 2 Movement. The governing mayor Klaus Schütz , who was in the awkward position of having to rule over the life of his challenger, ran for the SPD for the second time . After the federal government gave in to the demands and five prisoners, accompanied by the former Berlin mayor Heinrich Albertz in South Yemen were flown, Lorenz came two days off after the election.

The SPD lost 7.8 percentage points in the election and with 42.6% of the votes its position as the strongest political force and the absolute majority it had held since 1954 . The CDU received 43.9% of the vote (+5.7 percentage points), the FDP 7.1% of the vote (-1.3 percentage points). Klaus Schütz then formed a social liberal Senate and was thus confirmed in office.
