The 1958 election for the Berlin House of Representatives took place on December 7th and, like the 1948 elections, took place in an acute political crisis. The Khrushchev ultimatum was given just ten days before the election date, and the Soviet threat was very likely.

The top candidate of the SPD was the new governing mayor Willy Brandt for the first time , who on October 3, 1957 succeeded Otto Suhr , who died on August 30 . Brandt himself had an immense personal popularity, which was based in particular on his determined demeanor towards the Soviet occupying power.

With a vote increase of 8.0 percentage points and a final result of 52.6%, the SPD now also achieved the absolute majority of the votes cast. Your coalition partner CDU under Franz Amrehn also achieved a considerable increase in votes of 7.3 percentage points and a result of 37.7% of the votes.

Although the FDP fell from 12.8% to 3.8% and only the SPD and CDU were represented in the House of Representatives, Brandt continued the coalition with the CDU due to the crisis in the city. Thus until 1963, as there was between 1948 and 1953, there was no parliamentary opposition in Berlin.

As early as 1956, 6 members of the FDP had converted to the Free People's Party (FVP), which was split off from it . While the FVP merged with the DP in West Germany, the Berlin Association stood up independently under the name of the Free German People's Party (FDV).

The turnout was a record 92.9% of eligible voters.
