Election to the Berlin House of Representatives in 1979
The election to the Berlin House of Representatives on March 18, 1979 brought no major changes in Berlin.
The SPD , which stood for the first time under the new Governing Mayor Dietrich Stobbe , was able to maintain its position with 42.7% (+0.1 percentage points). On April 2, 1977, Dietrich Stobbe took over from Klaus Schütz , who had resigned as a result of several building scandals .
From this point of view and also against the background of the fact that the SPD had been in power in Berlin almost without interruption for over 30 years, it was considered uncertain before the election whether the SPD would be able to assert itself again.
For its part, the CDU received 44.4% of the votes (+0.5 percentage points) under its new top candidate Richard von Weizsäcker , the FDP got 8.1% of the votes (+1.0 percentage points).
Thereafter the social-liberal coalition under Dietrich Stobbe was continued.
