The election of the City Council (SIA) of (East) Berlin on May 6, 1990 in the course of the local elections in the GDR in 1990 was the first and at the same time the last election of the Berlin SIA in GDR times that corresponded to democratic electoral principles.

A few days later, the following five parliamentary groups were formed in the SIA:

  • SPD , the relative majority, 34.1% of the seats,
  • CDU / DA , 25 mandates, 18.1% of mandates.
Together, 52.8% of the mandates, the so-called “grand” coalition , resulted in the election of the last mayor, Tino Schwierzina .
