Tino Schwierzina

Tino Antoni Schwierzina (born May 30, 1927 in Königshütte , Upper Silesia , † December 29, 2003 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SPD ). He was Lord Mayor of East Berlin .

Life

The son of a doctor attended school in Magdeburg from 1933 , was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1944 and was an American prisoner of war from 1945 to 1948 . After graduating from high school, he began studying law in 1948 and worked as a legal advisor in the GDR from 1952 . In 1963 Schwierzina received a suspended sentence of six months for “aiding and abetting illegal border crossing ”, and five years later he retired from professional life due to invalidity.

In 1989 Schwierzina was one of the founding members of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SDP) and was a member of the state executive. In May 1990 Schwierzina was elected to the East Berlin city council. From May 30, 1990 to January 11, 1991 he was the last Lord Mayor of East Berlin. From January 1991 to October 1995 he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives ( 12th electoral term ), where he was elected Vice President and then retired. In 1996 he was named the City Elder of Berlin .

Since June 2, 2014 a street in Berlin-Heinersdorf has been named after Schwierzina. He is buried in the St. Hedwig Cemetery II in Berlin-Weißensee. His grave is dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave .
