Berlin line

In 1985 Hartenhauer became deputy head of the culture department in the Berlin magistrate, and a year later he was already city councilor for culture. In this position his main task was to organize the 750th anniversary of Berlin. When Lord Mayor Erhard Krack was held responsible for the fraudulent elections in the local elections of May 7, 1989 , and he resigned in February 1990, Hartenauer was elected as his successor. He prevailed against Ingrid Pankraz , who held office as a temporary solution for the time between Krack's resignation and the new election. After the election of the new city council , in May 1990 Tino Schwierzina was also elected as a new mayor. Hartenauer then took a job in the private sector.
